The two days ‘National Seminar On Cultural And Linguistic Studies In Northeast India: Prospects And Challenges’ was inaugurated by Shri PBO Warjri (Retired IAS), Chief Information Commissioner of Meghalaya. The Chief Guest stressed on the on the importance of language as the most important component of culture.

Language, he said, is not just a means of communication. It is also a great influencer of our culture and even our thought processes.   

About The Seminar:

North Eastern States consist of different social group with diverse cultures. The unity in diversity has been guiding the road map of Indian culture which can be seen in this far flung enchanting part of Indian in customary practices folk songs and dances, food habits and forest life, manuscripts and folk literature etc. The people of North-Eastern India inhabit a multi-ethic, multi- linguistic and multi-religious society. They basically belong to three main language group: Indo-Aryan, Austro-Asiatic and Tibeto-Burman. With the passage of time, habit culture is also involving due to culture assimilation of different ethno-culture groups under various socio-political economic systems. But North Eastern region has been facing challenges as its copes with pressure emanating from its ethnic diversity culture. Special focus in discussion of this seminar will be the present status and challenge to study the culture and language of the North Eastern region in a holistic ways

The Seminar was organised by the The Department of languages (Assamese, Bengali, Khasi, Garo, Nepali and Hindi), Sankardev College and sponsored by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Stusies (MAKAIAS)

It was held on 30th and 31st October 2019 at Sankardev College.

The seminar was actively participated by the scholars and researchers from IIT Guwahati, Tezpur University, Guwahati University, Dibrugarh university, Assam University, NEHU, IGNUO, USTM, Sankardev College, St Mary’s College, St Edmunds College, St Anthony’s College, and other solleges and universities of Assam and Meghalaya.
